A favorite habitat of the Ruffed Grouse is at the edges of wooded slopes where they merge with open fields in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.  A flushed grouse is an expert at putting a tree between himself and the grouse hunter and dog, but a nearby field of tall grass sometimes is the shortest path to safety.
