When driving on West Virginia Route 88 east of Wheeling, a few hundred yards past the stately Oglebay Mansion, you come to the Oglebay Stables on the left. There are usually a few horses in the field directly behind the stables and I found this sorrel and a bay horse grazing there. Setting up a portable easel, I spent part of the morning and all afternoon trying to capture one of the horses on canvas. Painting “en plein air” (a French term meaning a painting completed outside in front of your subject matter) is a new experience for me. After enduring the 90 degree heat with no shade and bees in my paint, I left with this image on the canvas and paint on my face and clothes (hopefully I didn’t get paint on the horses).
